Summary

The aging US population will increase head and neck surgical procedures (HNSPs) by approximately 15.3% by 2020. This rise in HNSPs will significantly boost the workload for head and neck surgeons.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Cross-sectional analysis of national databases (National Hospital Discharge Summary, National Survey of Ambulatory Surgery).
  • Age-specific HNSP rates were calculated using 2006 data and projected to 2020 based on US Census Bureau demographic predictions.
  • Surgical workload was assessed using physician work relative value units (RVUs).

Main Results:

  • In 2006, an estimated 366,050 HNSPs were performed, requiring 2.49 million work RVUs.
  • By 2020, an estimated 422,183 HNSPs are projected, requiring 2.88 million work RVUs.
