Summary

Acupuncture can rarely cause hemopericardium, a serious heart condition. Prompt diagnosis and pericardiocentesis are crucial for successful treatment and patient recovery.

Background:

Acupuncture, a traditional Chinese medicine technique, is increasingly used worldwide.
While generally safe, rare but severe complications can occur, necessitating awareness among healthcare providers.

Observation:

A 55-year-old woman developed hemopericardium shortly after undergoing acupuncture.
Clinical presentation included signs suggestive of cardiac tamponade.

Findings:

Diagnostic imaging, including chest CT scan and echocardiography, confirmed the presence of hemopericardium.
Pericardiocentesis was performed immediately, leading to successful fluid drainage and symptom relief.

Implications:

This case highlights the critical need for emergency physicians to consider acupuncture-related complications, particularly hemopericardium.
