Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Integrative Medicine

Background:

  • Acupuncture, a traditional Chinese medicine technique, is increasingly used worldwide.
  • While generally safe, rare but severe complications can occur, necessitating awareness among healthcare providers.

Observation:

  • A 55-year-old woman developed hemopericardium shortly after undergoing acupuncture.
  • Clinical presentation included signs suggestive of cardiac tamponade.

Findings:

  • Diagnostic imaging, including chest CT scan and echocardiography, confirmed the presence of hemopericardium.
  • Pericardiocentesis was performed immediately, leading to successful fluid drainage and symptom relief.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the critical need for emergency physicians to consider acupuncture-related complications, particularly hemopericardium.
