Area of Science:

  • Spinal Surgery
  • Surgical Technology
  • Minimally Invasive Procedures

Context:

  • Spinal surgery drilling requires clear visualization and effective temperature management.
  • Smoke, blood, and irrigation fluid can obscure the surgical field.
  • Elevated drill temperatures pose a risk of thermal injury to neural tissues.

Purpose:

  • To introduce and evaluate the efficacy of a novel mist irrigation system (MIS) for spinal surgery drilling.
  • To compare the performance of MIS against drip irrigation (DI) and no irrigation in terms of visibility, drilling time, and temperature control.
  • To assess the potential of MIS in enhancing surgical precision and safety in deep and narrow operative fields.

Summary:

  • The mist irrigation system (MIS) enhances visibility during spinal surgery by effectively clearing smoke, blood, and irrigation fluid.

  • Experiments using an acrylic plate demonstrated that MIS and DI reduced drilling time and post-drilling temperatures compared to no irrigation.
  • The study suggests MIS may prevent acrylic plate melting due to high drill temperatures, indicating efficient cooling.
  • MIS facilitates drilling in challenging deep and narrow surgical sites.
  • Impact:

    • Improved intraoperative visibility for spinal surgeons.
    • Reduced risk of thermal injury to critical neural structures.
    • Potential to enhance the safety and efficiency of spinal drilling procedures.
    • MIS offers a promising advancement in surgical irrigation and cooling technology.
