Summary

Left-sided valvular endocarditis (LSVE) is common in pigs and often leads to brain lesions. These endocarditis-associated brain lesions (EABLs) are frequently found, even with few lesions per animal.

Background:

  • Left-sided valvular endocarditis (LSVE) is prevalent in slaughter pigs.
  • Renal thromboembolism is a known complication, but brain embolization is less understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the presence and characteristics of endocarditis-associated brain lesions (EABLs) in pigs with LSVE.
  • To identify the etiological agents of LSVE and their association with EABLs.

Main Methods:

  • Histological examination of 20 pig brains with LSVE and 11 controls.
  • Bacteriological and fluorescence in-situ hybridization for etiological diagnosis.
  • Analysis of lesion types: encephalitis, infarcts, perivascular inflammation, and meningitis.

Main Results:

  • Focal encephalitis found in 12/20 pigs with LSVE; lesions were typically few and mild.
  • Common etiological agents included Streptococcus suis and Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae.
