Autonomic responses during symptom validity tests are unclear. This study found skin conductance, but not heart rate, differed when participants feigned cognitive deficits on the Victoria Symptom Validity Test (VSVT).

Background:

  • Autonomic psychophysiological responses during symptom validity tests are not well understood.
  • Understanding these responses can aid in evaluating genuine cognitive deficits versus malingering.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate peripheral psychophysiological correlates, specifically electrodermal conductance and heart rate, during the Victoria Symptom Validity Test (VSVT).
  • To compare these responses under conditions of exaggerated cognitive deficits (ECD) and normal effort.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty participants performed the VSVT under two conditions: ECD and normal effort.
  • Electrodermal conductance and heart rate were monitored throughout the test.
  • Data were analyzed to identify differences between correct answers and errors in each condition.

Main Results:

  • Significant differences in skin conductance were observed between correct answers and errors, but only during the decision-making phase of the ECD condition.
  • Increased maximum skin conductance during simulated deficits in the ECD condition may indicate emotional activation.
  • No significant differences in heart rate were found between the ECD and normal effort conditions.

Conclusions:

  • Electrodermal conductance may serve as a potential indicator of deception or emotional activation during symptom validity testing.
  • Heart rate does not appear to be a reliable indicator in this context.
  • Further research is needed to explore the implications of these findings in forensic and clinical settings.
