Drugs for Treatment of Ulcerative Colitis in IBD

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory condition primarily affecting the colon and rectum. The primary drugs used in the treatment of ulcerative colitis are aminosalicylates. They exhibit anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties. They modulate inflammatory mediators and inhibit the activity of nuclear factor κB (NF-κB). Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between various risk factors and the development of ulcerative colitis (UC).
  • To analyze the role of smoking, family history, and other factors in UC etiology within a defined community.

Main Methods:

  • A population-based, case-control study design was employed.
  • Ulcerative colitis (UC) cases were identified using Lennard-Jones criteria between 1992 and 1995.
  • Controls were matched for age, sex, and habitat; conditional logistic regression was used for multivariate analysis.

Main Results:

  • Current smokers had a reduced risk of UC (OR=0.55), while ex-smokers showed an increased risk (OR=1.94).
  • A family history of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) was significantly associated with UC development (p=0.0002).
  • No statistical differences were found for appendectomy, childhood hygiene, or oral contraceptive use.

Conclusions:

  • Current smoking acts as a protective factor against ulcerative colitis (UC).
  • Ex-smoking and a family history of IBD are identified as risk factors for developing UC.
