Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Public Health
  • Mental Health Research

Background:

  • Overt suicide and intentional life-threatening behavior (ILTB) pose significant risks in long-term care settings.
  • Understanding the prevalence and characteristics of these behaviors is crucial for developing targeted interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the extent and nature of overt suicide and ILTB in long-term care facilities.
  • To identify demographic risk factors and common behavioral patterns associated with these behaviors.

Main Methods:

  • A quantitative study involving questionnaires mailed to administrators of 1,080 long-term care facilities.
  • In-depth qualitative case studies were conducted in four selected facilities, including observation, interviews, and medical record reviews.

Main Results:

  • White males were identified as the demographic group at highest risk for overt suicide and ILTB.
  • Common suicidal behaviors included refusal to eat or drink and refusal of medications.
  • Psychological factors such as depression, loneliness, feelings of family rejection, and loss were significant contributing factors.

Conclusions:

  • The findings highlight specific risk factors and behaviors associated with suicide and ILTB in long-term care.
  • Further research and targeted prevention strategies are needed to address these critical issues in this vulnerable population.
