Area of Science:
- Environmental Science
- Sensor Technology
- Pipeline Engineering
Background:
- Natural gas (NG) pipeline monitoring is crucial for safety, economic operation, and environmental protection.
- Existing leak detection methods have limitations, driving research into new systems.
- Biosensors offer a low-cost, high-performance alternative for environmental monitoring when properly designed and networked.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and validate a robust cooperative scheme for natural gas leak surveillance.
- To integrate biosensors with conventional detectors for enhanced pipeline monitoring.
- To optimize the sensor network for reliable, granular information delivery.
Main Methods:
- A cooperative/synergistic scheme integrating biosensors and conventional detectors was proposed.
- In situ validation and optimization of the sensor network were performed.
- Fuzzy Multicriteria Analysis (FMCA) was employed for biosensor design selection based on target analyte and micro-environment.
Main Results:
- The proposed scheme demonstrated reliable natural gas leak surveillance capabilities.
- Network optimization achieved the required granularity for effective monitoring.
- FMCA successfully guided the selection of appropriate biosensor designs.
Conclusions:
- The cooperative biosensor and conventional detector scheme provides a reliable solution for natural gas pipeline leak detection.
- Optimized sensor network design and deployment are key to effective pipeline integrity management.
- This approach enhances safety, loss prevention, and environmental protection in pipeline operations.
