Insights
Coronary perforation during PCI can be fatal. A novel approach successfully treated bleeding without ischemia using a drug delivery catheter as a perfusion device when standard treatment was unavailable.
Area of Science:
- Interventional Cardiology
- Cardiovascular Research
Background:
- Coronary perforation is a serious complication of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
- Standard treatment involves perfusion balloon catheters, which may not always be accessible.
Observation:
- A case of coronary perforation occurred during PCI.
- Bleeding complications arose, necessitating urgent intervention.
Findings:
- A local drug delivery catheter was utilized as an alternative perfusion device.
- This innovative approach successfully controlled bleeding without causing myocardial ischemia.
Implications:
- This case demonstrates a viable alternative treatment for coronary perforation.
- Highlights the potential of repurposed devices in managing PCI complications.
- Suggests a new strategy to improve patient outcomes in emergent cardiovascular procedures.
Abstract:
Coronary perforation is a complication of percutaneous coronary intervention that may be fatal. Conventionally, a perfusion balloon catheter is used for treatment, but may not always be available. We report a case in which bleeding due to coronary perforation was successfully treated without induction of ischemia using a local drug delivery catheter as a perfusion device.
