Summary

Maternal relaxation techniques, like guided imagery, positively influence fetal behavior and uterine activity during pregnancy. Guided imagery appears more effective than progressive muscle relaxation for promoting fetal well-being.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Determine fetal behavioral states (sleep, wakefulness).
  • Assess maternal relaxation effects on fetal behavior and uterine activity.
  • Investigate maternal physiological/endocrine changes in maternal-fetal relaxation transfer.

Main Methods:

  • Analyzed behavior of 33 fetuses during relaxation/rest.
  • Used computerized cardiotocogram (CTG) for fetal heart rate (FHR), FHR variation, FHR acceleration, and body movements.
  • Measured maternal heart rate, blood pressure, cortisol, and norepinephrine.

Main Results:

  • Maternal relaxation interventions altered fetal behavior.
  • Intervention groups showed increased long-term FHR variation.
  • Progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) group exhibited greater uterine activity than guided imagery (GI) and control groups.

Conclusions:

  • Fetuses may respond to maternal relaxation.
  • Guided imagery (GI) may be more beneficial than progressive muscle relaxation (PMR).
  • Findings are particularly relevant for pregnant individuals focusing on bodily sensations.
