Occult hepatitis B infection was detected in HBsAg-negative individuals using HBV DNA testing. Detecting hepatitis B virus large surface protein (HBLP) in HBsAb-negative samples aids in identifying occult HBV infection.

  • To evaluate hepatitis B virus large surface protein (HBLP) detection as a strategy for identifying occult HBV infection.

  • Among 2000 HBsAg-negative serum samples, 19 cases of HBV DNA were detected exclusively in the HBsAb-negative group.
  • These 19 cases were positive for both HBsAg and HBLP using enhanced serological assays.
  • HBV DNA levels in these occult infections varied from 100 to over 500 copies/ml.

Impact:

  • This study identifies a serological marker (HBLP) for improved detection of occult HBV infection.
  • Findings provide a reference for developing enhanced screening strategies for occult HBV.
  • Highlights the importance of considering HBLP testing in HBsAg-negative populations.
