Area of Science:

  • Neurodevelopmental Disorders
  • Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
  • Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)

Background:

  • Autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) present unique challenges during adolescence.
  • Behavioral decompensation is a significant concern in this population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize behavioral decompensation in adolescents diagnosed with ASD.
  • To identify common symptoms, interventions, and outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study analyzed 11 adolescents with ASD (8 male, 3 female).
  • Data collected included demographics, initial decompensation symptoms, interventions, and follow-up evolution.
  • Mean age at decompensation was 13 years (range 10-16).

Main Results:

  • Common symptoms included hyperactivity, aggression, irritability, shouting, inflexibility, and catatonia.
  • Most patients had prior psychiatric medication, excluding catatonia cases.
  • Eight of 11 patients recovered within a mean of 4 months with combined psychological and pharmacological treatment (average 2 drugs).
  • Two patients with catatonia did not recover; one additional patient showed no improvement with medication.

Conclusions:

  • Behavioral decompensation is a frequent complication for adolescents with ASD.
  • Combined interventions and strong familial support are crucial for recovery.
  • Catatonia may indicate a poorer prognosis.
