Summary

Evaluating global health practicums in nursing education is crucial. This study found existing evaluation methods generally useful, with minor adjustments and structural revisions enhancing the student experience and professional practice connections.

Background:

Global health education is growing in nursing literature.
Course evaluation for global health practicums is under-researched.
Need for rigorous examination of existing evaluation methods.

Purpose of the Study:

To rigorously evaluate current methods for an elective global health practicum.
To identify areas for improvement in course structure and evaluation.
To understand student experiences and learning outcomes.

Main Methods:

Qualitative evaluation of an elective global health practicum.
Interviewed sixteen students who completed the practicum.
Reviewed existing course evaluation tools and documentation.

Main Results:

Student preparedness, student-preceptor relationships, and self-reflection were key themes.
Existing evaluation methods were considered generally useful with minor adjustments needed.
Structural revisions to preparation, placement, and post-placement phases were recommended.

Conclusions:

Global health practicum evaluations require minor adjustments to existing methods.
Structural revisions enhance student preparation and post-placement reflection.
Connecting practicum experiences to professional practice is vital for learning.
