Summary

Ethylcyanoacrylate (ECA) tissue adhesive showed superior cosmetic outcomes for upper eyelid blepharoplasty scars compared to fast-absorbing gut sutures at both 1 and 3 months. ECA also demonstrated marginally better results than polypropylene sutures.

  • Cosmetic outcomes were assessed by participants and a blinded physician evaluator at 1 and 3 months post-procedure.
  • Main Results:

    • At 1 month, ECA was significantly superior to fast-absorbing gut (p=.03) and marginally better than polypropylene (p=.25).
    • Polypropylene showed equivalent outcomes to fast-absorbing gut at 1 month (p=.46).
    • At 3 months, ECA maintained superiority over fast-absorbing gut (p=.03).

    Conclusions:

    • Both sutured epidermal closure and tissue adhesive are highly effective for upper eyelid blepharoplasty.
    • Physicians and participants perceived superior cosmetic outcomes with ECA compared to fast-absorbing gut.
    • ECA represents a viable and cosmetically favorable option for eyelid closure.
