Teratogenicity01:07

Teratogenicity

The ability of a drug to produce structural deformations and functional abnormalities in the developing embryo or the fetus is called teratogenicity, and the drug producing this effect is known as a teratogen. Teratogenic effects include stillbirth, miscarriage, intrauterine growth restriction, and neurocognitive delay. A teratogen may affect the embryo at different stages of development, which is important in determining the type and extent of the damage. During blastocyst formation, the early...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

First-trimester screening offers early reassurance for pregnancy development. However, early prenatal diagnosis does not reduce long-term emotional impact and can increase parental anxiety due to potential concerns identified during screening.

Area of Science:

  • Maternal-Fetal Medicine
  • Prenatal Diagnostics
  • Reproductive Health

Background:

  • First-trimester screening for pregnancy complications is advancing with technology.
  • Early pregnancy screening provides reassurance but can also cause anxiety.
  • The emotional impact of early diagnosis versus later diagnosis is not well-understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review current first-trimester screening methods for pregnancy complications.
  • To discuss the psychological impact of early prenatal diagnosis on parents.
  • To highlight the need for professional support in managing parental anxiety during screening.

Main Methods:

  • Review of current literature on first-trimester screening.
  • Analysis of the emotional effects of prenatal diagnostic findings.
  • Discussion of challenges in managing parental anxiety related to ultrasound markers.

Main Results:

  • Early screening offers reassurance but does not lessen long-term emotional distress.
  • Ultrasound markers can induce significant anxiety and uncertainty for parents.
  • The emotional burden of early diagnosis can extend throughout and beyond pregnancy.

Conclusions:

  • Healthcare professionals must acknowledge and address the adverse emotional effects of screening.
  • Developing skills to help parents cope with screening uncertainties is crucial.
  • Improved communication and support are needed for parents undergoing prenatal screening.
