Background:

Paternal roles are increasingly recognized as crucial in family well-being.
Understanding the transition to fatherhood in diverse cultural contexts is essential for effective support.
Limited research exists on the specific experiences of first-time fathers in Thailand.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore and understand the process of Thai men becoming first-time fathers.
To identify the core experiences and developmental stages involved in early fatherhood.

Main Methods:

Grounded theory methodology was employed.
In-depth interviews were conducted with twenty expectant fathers.
Participants were recruited from antenatal clinics in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Main Results:

The core process identified was "protecting the unborn baby."
This process encompasses three phases: confirming and accepting, perceiving the unborn baby as human, and ensuring health.
Expectant fathers utilized various strategies to manage emotions and develop their paternal identity.

Conclusions:

The "protecting the unborn baby" process offers a framework for understanding the first-time fatherhood transition in Thailand.
This research provides valuable insights for healthcare professionals, including nurses and midwives, to better support expectant fathers.
Targeted interventions can be developed to assist men in navigating the challenges and opportunities of becoming a father.
