Dimensions of Health and Illness01:21

Dimensions of Health and Illness

The factors influencing the health-illness continuum can be internal or external and may or may not be under conscious control. They are related to the following eight human dimensions, and each dimension is interrelated to one other.

Concepts of Health and Illness

Health is a condition of the body, mind, and spirit where an individual remains free from illness. Similarly, wellness is an active state, including living a lifestyle that promotes physical, mental, and emotional health. Physical health is critical for the overall well-being and can be affected by lifestyle, activity level, diet, and behavior. The highest attainable standard of health is a fundamental and universal human right. Consider Lisa, a fifteen-year-old born with congenital...

Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention I

A model is a theoretical way to understand a concept or an idea. Models can overcome barriers to health regardless of diverse economic and cultural backgrounds. In addition, models make the task easier by providing different ways to approach complex issues. There are two major health promotion models: the health belief model and the health promotion model.
The health belief model (HBM) attempts to predict health-related behavior in specific belief patterns. According to the HBM, a person's...

Stress Prevention and Stress Management Techniques VI

Adopting a healthier lifestyle often requires overcoming significant challenges, but leveraging psychological, social, and cultural resources can facilitate meaningful change. Effective self-change hinges on understanding and applying key tools such as motivation and goal setting, which help sustain efforts toward long-term health benefits.
Motivation and Self-Determination
Motivation, the driving force behind behavior, plays a pivotal role at every stage of the change process. The research...

Measurement of Bioavailability: Pharmacodynamic Methods

Pharmacodynamic methods provide insights into a drug's effects on physiological processes over time and play a crucial role in understanding bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy. These methods can be broadly classified into acute pharmacological and therapeutic response approaches, each with distinct mechanisms and applications. The acute pharmacological response method directly correlates a drug's physiological effects, such as ECG or pupil diameter changes, to its time course in the body.

Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention II

The person's health status fluctuates continually, varying from being in good health to becoming ill and returning to being healthy. To understand the concept of illness prevention, there are two models. First, the health-illness continuum model is a graphic representation of an individual's wellness. It states that a person is considered healthy in the absence of physical disease and the presence of good emotional health.
The agent-host-environment model states that disease results from...

Area of Science:

  • Public Health and Health Policy
  • Health Economics
  • Bioethics

Background:

  • Global demographic shifts are increasing life expectancy, but healthy life expectancy may not keep pace, leading to a greater proportion of life spent in less than full health.
  • Accurate valuation of health states is increasingly important for population health measurement and economic analyses.
  • Current methods for valuing health states, such as standard gamble and time trade-off, are prone to individual biases (e.g., age, ethnicity, nationality) hindering cross-population comparability.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To discuss how John Rawls' "veil of ignorance" thought experiment can be applied to derive more objective and comparable health state valuations.
  • To propose operationalizable methods for incorporating the "veil of ignorance" into health state valuation processes.
  • To advocate for the development of health measures that are objective and comparable across diverse populations.

Main Methods:

  • Review of existing techniques for health state valuation (standard gamble, time trade-off, person trade-off, visual analogue scale).
  • Conceptual application of John Rawls' "veil of ignorance" to mitigate individual biases in health state valuation.
  • Discussion of potential operationalization strategies for a "veil of ignorance" approach in health valuation studies.

Main Results:

  • Current health state valuation methods are limited by inherent individual and population-specific biases.
  • The "veil of ignorance" offers a theoretical framework to reduce subjective influences on health state valuations.
  • Implementing a "veil of ignorance" approach could enhance the comparability of health state values across different populations.

Conclusions:

  • Objective and comparable health state valuations are essential for societies with growing health interests.
  • The Rawlsian "veil of ignorance" presents a promising alternative for deriving unbiased health state values.
  • Operationalizing this approach can lead to more equitable and effective health policy and interventions.
