Blinding01:11

Blinding

Blinding is a commonly used method of not telling participants which treatment a subject is receiving. Blinding is a critical part of a randomized control trial or RCT. It reduces the bias that affects the results. In an RCT, blinding is used in the form of a placebo. A placebo effect occurs when untreated subjects falsely believe they have received the treatment and report improved symptoms. A placebo or a dummy treatment is administered to subjects to negate the bias caused by such an effect.
Blind Procedures02:07

Blind Procedures

Ideally, the people who observe and record the children’s behavior are unaware of who was assigned to the experimental or control group, in order to control for experimenter bias. Experimenter bias refers to the possibility that a researcher’s expectations might skew the results of the study. Remember, conducting an experiment requires a lot of planning, and the people involved in the research project have a vested interest in supporting their hypotheses. If the observers knew which child was...

Methods of Documentation V: CBE

Charting by Exception, or CBE, is a method of documentation used in healthcare, particularly in nursing, that focuses on documenting only significant or abnormal findings rather than recording every detail. This approach aims to streamline the documentation process, improve efficiency, and ensure that healthcare providers can quickly identify deviations from normalcy in patient assessments.
In CBE, healthcare professionals establish predefined standards of practice that define what constitutes...
Clinical Trials: Overview01:11

Clinical Trials: Overview

Clinical development focuses on how the drug will interact with the human body and encompasses four key phases of clinical trials, each serving a specific purpose in assessing the safety and effectiveness of new drugs. These phases overlap and build upon one another. Phase I involves a small group of healthy volunteers (typically 20-80 individuals) or, in cases where significant toxicity is expected, patients with the targeted disease, such as cancer or AIDS. The volunteers are tested for...
Changes in Skin Color: Clinical Perspectives01:14

Changes in Skin Color: Clinical Perspectives

The first thing a clinician sees is the skin, so the examination of the skin should be part of any thorough physical examination. Most skin disorders are relatively benign, but a few, including melanomas, can be fatal if untreated. A couple of the more noticeable disorders, albinism and vitiligo, affect the appearance of the skin and its accessory organs.
Albinism
Albinism is a genetic disorder that affects (completely or partially) the coloring of skin, hair, and eyes. The defect is primarily...

Summary

Evidence-based medicine (EBM) uses the best available evidence for patient care decisions. However, industry-funded research may introduce bias, impacting clinical practice and patient outcomes.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Research Methodology
  • Clinical Decision-Making

Context:

  • Explosion in clinical research and information access.
  • Need to address challenges in staying updated with medical advancements.
  • Increasing variability in clinical practice and inconsistent application of evidence.

Purpose:

  • To define evidence-based medicine (MBE) and its core principles.
  • To highlight the critical role of rigorous research in patient care.
  • To examine the influence of pharmaceutical industry funding on medical research.

Summary:

  • Evidence-based medicine (MBE) involves conscious, explicit use of the best available evidence for patient care.
  • This process includes identifying knowledge gaps, conducting precise research, and analyzing findings' validity.

Evidence-based Knowledge Synthesis and Hypothesis Validation: Navigating Biomedical Knowledge Bases via Explainable AI and Agentic Systems

Published on: June 13, 2025

  • A significant portion of medical research is funded and conducted by the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Impact:

    • Pharmaceutical industry involvement raises concerns about biased research agendas.
    • Financial backing can lead to the promotion of results favorable to industry interests.
    • This distortion potentially compromises the integrity of medical evidence and patient care decisions.
