Summary

The substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) effectively inhibits hippocampal seizures, while the substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNpr) shows a lesser effect. These findings suggest distinct roles for SNpc and SNpr in controlling epilepsy.

Background:

  • To characterize the action of the substantia nigra (SN) on a focal model of hippocampal epilepsy.
  • To investigate the differential roles of SN pars compacta (SNpc) and SN pars reticulata (SNpr) in seizure control.

  • Experiments were conducted on encéphale isolé cats with penicillin-induced focal hippocampal epilepsy.
