Summary

Inverted papillomas of the nose and sinuses are linked to squamous cell carcinoma in 24% of cases, a higher rate than previously thought. This association warrants careful clinical evaluation and management for patients with these nasal tumors.

Background:

  • Inverted papillomas (IPs) are benign sinonasal tumors.
  • A small percentage of IPs are associated with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the incidence of SCC in patients with sinonasal inverted papillomas.
  • To compare the clinical presentation and outcomes of IPs with and without associated SCC.

  • Retrospective review of 46 patients treated for sinonasal inverted papillomas over 10 years.
