Abstract:
The extent to which the vagaries of the history of biology have influenced subsequent developments is often surprising. In particular, the early dichotomies between individual fields of enquiry have sometimes led to the disregard of important biological phenomena. The development of biological oceanography over the last 100 years provides an interesting example.
