Syncope: mechanisms and manifestations

Patients who have had syncopal episodes--even one episode--should be carefully evaluated. Of special concern is identifying those with a cardiovascular cause of syncope, in whom the one-year mortality is high and death is frequently sudden. An understanding of syncope's various potential mechanisms provides the key to the diagnosis.
