Summary

A new four-level severity scale for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) was developed. This scale uses oxygen desaturation and apnea/hyponea index, highlighting the need for both in assessing OSA severity.

Background:

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder.
Accurate severity assessment is crucial for effective treatment.
Existing scales may not fully capture OSA complexity.

Purpose of the Study:

To introduce a novel four-level severity scale for obstructive sleep apnea.
To evaluate the scale's utility using key clinical parameters.

Main Methods:

A severity scale was developed using four criteria: maximum oxygen desaturation, apnea/hyponea index, daytime sleepiness, and cardiac disease symptoms.
The scale was applied to 175 patients post-uvulopalatopharyngoplasty surgery.

The patient cohort exhibited the following OSA severity distribution: 19% mild, 33% moderate, 17% moderately severe, and 31% severe.
A poor correlation was observed between oxygen desaturation levels and the apnea/hyponea index.

Conclusions:

Both oxygen desaturation and apnea/hyponea index are essential for accurate obstructive sleep apnea severity assessment.
The proposed four-level scale offers a comprehensive approach to OSA severity stratification.
