Information Processing Approach01:30

Information Processing Approach

The information-processing theory of cognitive development centers on fundamental mental processes, including attention, memory, and problem-solving skills. Researchers in this field examine how cognitive abilities, such as working memory, evolve and influence children's overall development. Studies indicate that children with stronger working memory tend to excel in reading comprehension, math, and problem-solving compared to peers with less efficient memory skills. Low working memory is also...
Cognitive Development During Adolescence01:18

Cognitive Development During Adolescence

During adolescence, individuals experience significant cognitive development that enhances their understanding of others' emotions and thoughts, known as cognitive empathy. This period is marked by an increased ability to adapt to others' perspectives and a more nuanced understanding of others' mental states, a skill that is foundational for social problem-solving and conflict avoidance. The development of cognitive empathy relies heavily on the theory of mind — the recognition that people have...

Revisionist Views of Adolescent and Adult Cognition

A revisionist approach to Jean Piaget's theory of cognitive development has brought new insights that challenge and reinterpret his established ideas. Piaget proposed that the formal operational stage, emerging in adolescence, represents the culmination of cognitive maturity. During this stage, individuals are said to develop abstract thinking, engage in systematic problem-solving, and show a form of egocentrism, believing others are as preoccupied with their behavior as they are themselves.
Self-Discrepancy Theory02:45

Self-Discrepancy Theory

One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.
Cognitive Development During Adulthood01:30

Cognitive Development During Adulthood

Cognitive development continues throughout adulthood, undergoing significant shifts across early, middle, and late stages. Individual transition occurs from adolescent idealism to pragmatic and adaptable thinking in early adulthood. During this period, individuals learn to integrate personal beliefs with the recognition that other perspectives are equally valid. Exposure to the complexities of modern society, diverse experiences, and higher education contribute to this adaptive thought process,...
Self-Evaluation: Self-Enhancement and Self-Verification03:00

Self-Evaluation: Self-Enhancement and Self-Verification

Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...

Summary

Intrinsic motivation decline in students is linked to academic struggles. For junior high students, lower verbal memory capacity, specifically digit span and story comprehension, correlates with reduced intrinsic academic motivation.

Area of Science:

  • Educational Psychology
  • Cognitive Neuroscience

Background:

  • Decreased intrinsic motivation is a frequent issue in students, impacting academic performance.
  • Cognitive development also plays a role in academic success.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between cognitive functions and the prevalence of decreased intrinsic academic motivation in elementary and junior high school students.

Main Methods:

  • 134 elementary (grades 4-6) and 133 junior high (grades 7-9) students completed motivation questionnaires.
  • Cognitive abilities were assessed using various paper-and-pencil and computerized tests, including memory and attention tasks.

Main Results:

  • No cognitive test scores correlated with decreased intrinsic motivation in elementary students.
  • In junior high students, low digit span forward and story comprehension scores were linked to a higher prevalence of decreased intrinsic motivation.

Conclusions:

  • Reduced verbal memory capacity is associated with decreased intrinsic academic motivation in junior high school students.
