Chronic Pharyngitis

Chronic pharyngitis refers to persistent inflammation of the pharyngial mucosa.
Etiology
It often arises from persistent viral or bacterial infections affecting sinuses and tonsils.
Additional contributing factors include inadequate dental hygiene, mouth breathing, recurring tonsillitis, allergic rhinitis, laryngopharyngeal reflux, and exposure to smoke, chemicals, and other environmental pollutants. Summary

Bipolar diathermy tonsillectomy significantly reduces operative time and blood loss compared to cold dissection. This makes it a safer tonsillectomy technique with potentially lower morbidity and complications.

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery
  • Surgical Techniques

Background:

  • Tonsillectomy is a common surgical procedure.
  • Comparing surgical techniques is crucial for optimizing patient outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare Bipolar Diathermy Tonsillectomy (BDT) with Cold Dissection Tonsillectomy (CDT).
  • To evaluate operative time, blood loss, pain, diet, activity, and complications.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study involving 200 patients divided equally between BDT and CDT.
  • Comparison of key surgical and postoperative parameters between the two groups.

Main Results:

  • BDT showed significantly less operative time and blood loss (p<0.001).
  • No significant differences were observed in postoperative pain, activity, or minor blood loss.
  • Diet intake differences were not statistically significant.

Conclusions:

  • Bipolar diathermy tonsillectomy is a safe and effective technique.
  • BDT offers advantages of reduced operative time and blood loss, potentially leading to less morbidity.
