A Parasite Rescue and Transformation Assay for Antileishmanial Screening Against Intracellular Leishmania donovani Amastigotes in THP1 Human Acute Monocytic Leukemia Cell Line

  • Clinical examination revealed decreased visual acuity and conjunctival congestion, with a pterygium noted.
  • A thin, white nematode was discovered and removed from the conjunctival fornix of the affected eye.

Findings:

  • The removed nematode was identified as an adult Thelazia callipaeda eyeworm.
  • This case represents the first documented instance of Human Thelaziasis in Bangladesh.
  • The successful removal and identification were confirmed through collaboration between hospital microbiology and university parasitology departments.

Implications:

  • This finding expands the known geographical distribution of Thelazia callipaeda.
  • Highlights the importance of considering parasitic causes for ocular conditions, even in regions where they are rarely reported.
