  • Distinct differences in route environment profiles were found between inner urban and suburban areas.
  • Suburban routes were perceived as safer and more stimulating for cycling than inner urban routes.
  • Findings were consistent for both men and women.

  • Suburban commuting routes offer higher bikeability than inner urban routes.
