Varicose Veins I: Introduction01:26

Varicose Veins I: Introduction

Varicose veins, or varicosities, are abnormally dilated and twisted superficial veins caused by venous valve incompetence. This condition commonly affects the lower extremities, especially the saphenous veins, due to the higher pressure from prolonged standing and walking. However, varicosities can also occur in other areas, such as the esophagus, vulva, spermatic cords, and anorectal region.Etiology and typesPrimary varicose veins, often idiopathic, are more common in women due to inherent...

Veins of the Abdomen and Pelvis

The human body is a complex system of interconnected parts, and the circulatory system plays a crucial role in maintaining overall health. One key component of this system is the inferior vena cava, a large vein responsible for returning blood from the abdominopelvic viscera and abdominal walls to the heart.
The inferior vena cava is fed by numerous smaller veins. The lumbar veins, for instance, drain the posterior abdominal wall, emptying both directly into the inferior vena cava and into the...

Varicose Veins II: Diagnostic Studies and Interprofessional Care

Varicose veins, or varicosities, develop when the valves in the veins, which control blood flow, weaken or damage. It causes blood to pool and the veins to enlarge. Understanding the clinical manifestations, diagnostic approaches, and management options for varicose veins is crucial for effective treatment and relief.Clinical manifestationsClinical manifestations of varicose veins include a heavy, achy feeling or pain after prolonged standing or sitting. This discomfort can often be relieved by...
Esophageal Varices-II: Clinical Features and Management01:28

Esophageal Varices-II: Clinical Features and Management

Esophageal varices often manifest as gastrointestinal bleeding episodes, presenting symptoms like hematemesis (vomiting of blood), hematochezia (passing fresh blood via the rectum), and melena (black, tarry stools). Other signs can include weight loss, anorexia, abdominal discomfort, jaundice, pruritus, altered mental status, and muscle cramps.
In the initial assessment, a thorough review of the patient's medical history is vital to identify risk factors such as liver disease, alcohol abuse, or...
Esophageal Varices-I: Introduction01:24

Esophageal Varices-I: Introduction

Esophageal varices are dilated, tortuous veins which are found mainly in the submucosa of the lower esophagus but which may also appear higher up or extend into the stomach. They develop due to increased pressure in the portal venous system, often as a result of liver cirrhosis. This condition scars and damages the liver, impeding normal blood flow through the portal vein. To compensate, blood seeks alternative pathways, forming fragile new vessels (varices) in the esophagus and stomach. These...
Hiatal Hernia01:25

Hiatal Hernia

A hiatal hernia is the abnormal protrusion of the stomach or other abdominal organs through the esophageal hiatus of the diaphragm into the thoracic cavity.Normally, the gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) lies below the diaphragm and is supported by the phrenoesophageal membrane, the diaphragmatic crura, and connective tissues. Weakening of these structures—due to aging, congenital defects like a short esophagus, or increased intra-abdominal pressure from coughing, obesity, pregnancy, or heavy...

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Andrology
  • Medical Devices

Background:

  • Varicocele is a common cause of male infertility, often associated with elevated scrotal temperature.
  • Elevated scrotal temperature can negatively impact sperm production and quality.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of Jinleng undershorts in reducing scrotal temperature in varicocele patients.
  • To assess the impact of Jinleng undershorts on clinical symptoms associated with varicocele.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 51 varicocele patients participated in the study.
  • Patients wore Jinleng undershorts for 30 minutes twice daily for 90 days.
  • Scrotal temperature and clinical symptoms were compared before and after treatment.

Main Results:

  • Significant reduction in left scrotal temperature (P < 0.01) and a trend of decrease in right scrotal temperature.
  • Marked improvement in symptoms including scrotal wetness, fever, swelling, backache, headache, dizziness, fatigue, and anxiety (P < 0.05).
  • Significant reduction in testicular pain (P < 0.01) and improvement in the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) score (P < 0.01).

Conclusions:

  • Jinleng undershorts demonstrate a therapeutic effect on mild to moderate varicocele.
  • The device can be a viable treatment option for managing varicocele symptoms and improving quality of life.
