Waterpipe smoking addiction may be linked to DRD2 gene variations. The A1 genotype was associated with shorter craving duration and frequent cafe visits among waterpipe smokers.

Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between DRD2 gene variations and waterpipe smoking behavior, addiction, and motives in Egyptian rural males.

- A case-control study involving 154 adult male waterpipe smokers (non-cigarette smokers) from a rural Egyptian survey.

- The A1 genotype (34.4% prevalence) was significantly associated with a shorter duration to craving after abstinence (OR 2.70, 95% CI: 1.18-6.23).
- A1 allele carriers were more likely to be frequent visitors of shisha cafes, younger, and heavier smokers (OR 2.52, 95% CI: 1.06-6.02).
Conclusions:
- Inherited variations in the DRD2 genotype may influence the intensity of waterpipe smoking craving.
- Frequency of visiting shisha cafes for smoking might be linked to DRD2 gene variations.
