Introspection01:29

Introspection

Introspection, long upheld as a reliable route to self-knowledge, involves examining one's thoughts, emotions, and mental processes. It underpins many psychological practices, from mindfulness meditation to psychotherapy and self-help strategies. However, empirical evidence challenges the accuracy of introspection as a means of understanding oneself.Limitations of Introspective InsightSeminal work by Nisbett and Wilson demonstrated that individuals are frequently unaware of the true causes...
Growth versus Fixed Mindset01:24

Growth versus Fixed Mindset

Carol Dweck introduced the term mindset to describe individuals' beliefs about their intellectual and personal capabilities. These beliefs significantly influence psychological processes such as motivation, goal-setting, and perseverance, ultimately shaping academic and life outcomes. Individuals generally possess one of two mindsets- a fixed or a growth mindset—each promoting different responses to success, failure, and challenge.Fixed vs. Growth MindsetA fixed mindset assumes that one's...
Self-Discrepancy Theory02:45

Self-Discrepancy Theory

One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.

The Scientific Method02:40

The Scientific Method

Research is what makes the difference between facts and opinions. Facts are observable realities, and opinions are personal judgments, conclusions, or attitudes that may or may not be accurate. In the scientific community, facts can be established only using evidence collected through empirical research.
Counterfactual Thinking01:19

Counterfactual Thinking

Counterfactual thinking is a cognitive process wherein individuals mentally reconstruct alternative versions of past events, often beginning with “what if” or “if only.” This reflective mechanism plays a significant role in shaping emotional experiences and guiding future behavior. Though typically triggered by unfavorable or unexpected outcomes, counterfactual thinking can also emerge in mundane, everyday decisions and experiences, revealing its deep entrenchment in human cognition.Types of...

    Summary

Mindfulness training may reduce conditional goal setting (CGS) in depressed individuals. However, brief meditation, particularly loving-kindness, might initially increase CGS in healthy adults, suggesting complex effects.

    Area of Science:

    • Psychology
    • Clinical Psychology
    • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

    Background:

    • Conditional goal setting (CGS) is linked to depression.
    • Mindfulness interventions are used for depression.
    • Previous research suggests a link between mindfulness and CGS in depressed patients.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate if mindfulness interventions alter CGS in depressed patients.
    • To examine the correlation between changes in dispositional mindfulness and CGS.
    • To explore the impact of brief meditation practices on CGS in healthy individuals.

    Main Methods:

    • Study 1: Longitudinal study of patients in a Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) trial, correlating changes in mindfulness and CGS.
    • Study 2: Experimental study with healthy participants exposed to brief breathing or loving-kindness meditation, assessing CGS.
    • Statistical analyses were used to determine associations and effects.

    Main Results:

    • Increased dispositional mindfulness was associated with decreased CGS in the MBCT trial.
    • Brief loving-kindness meditation, but not breathing meditation, increased CGS in healthy participants low in goal re-engagement.
    • The positive association between mindfulness and CGS reduction was not solely attributable to MBCT.

    Conclusions:

    • Longer-term increases in mindfulness correlate with reduced CGS in individuals with depressed mood.
    • Initial responses to meditation, especially loving-kindness, can be counterintuitive.
    • Further research is needed to understand the relationship between initial meditation reactions and long-term benefits.
