Post-traumatic Stress Disorder01:27

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric condition that arises following exposure to traumatic events such as natural disasters, forced displacement, or severe accidents. It significantly impairs individuals' ability to cope with daily activities and disrupts their emotional and psychological equilibrium.
Symptoms and Behavioral Manifestations
A spectrum of distressing symptoms characterizes PTSD. Recurrent flashbacks, where individuals involuntarily relive traumatic events, are a...

Theory of Romantic Attachment in Adulthood

Attachment is a long-standing connection or bond with others. While Attachment Theory was conceived in developmental psychology to describe infant-caregiver bonding, it's been extended into adulthood to include romantic relationships.

Introduction to Stress and Lifestyle

Stress is a multifaceted response to events perceived as challenging or threatening, highlighting physical, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral reactions. Physically, stress can lead to fatigue, sleep disruptions, and various health issues such as frequent colds, chest pains, and nausea. Emotionally, it can manifest as anxiety, depression, irritability, and anger triggered by both minor and major life events. Cognitively, it may result in difficulty in concentration, memory, and...

Psychoneuroimmunology: Cardiovascular Disease

Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) is a multidisciplinary field that examines how psychological factors, particularly stress, interact with the immune system and impact physical health. Research in PNI has shown that chronic or traumatic stress can disrupt both the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and the sympathetic nervous system. These disruptions contribute to serious health conditions, including cardiovascular diseases.
A key area of focus in PNI is the relationship between stress and coronary...
Stress and Mental Health01:30

Stress and Mental Health

Chronic stress profoundly affects mental health, significantly influencing mood, behavior, and overall quality of life. Research closely links chronic stress with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders. Ongoing exposure to stress can lead to physiological and psychological changes, initiating a cycle of emotional distress and maladaptive coping mechanisms.
Individuals with depression often experience challenges in both their personal and professional...
Hazan and Shaver's Attachment Styles01:28

Hazan and Shaver's Attachment Styles

Attachment theory, developed initially to explain infant–caregiver bonds, has been extended to illuminate patterns of intimacy in adult romantic relationships. Psychologists Cindy Hazan and Phillip Shaver proposed that the attachment styles observed in infancy form a framework for how individuals approach emotional closeness and conflict in adulthood. These attachment styles—secure, avoidant, and anxious—are linked to enduring patterns of behavior and emotional regulation in adult relationships.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Trauma Studies

Background:

  • Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a prevalent mental health condition often associated with interpersonal difficulties.
  • Intimate relationships are crucial for well-being, yet can be strained by the impact of trauma.
  • Empirical synthesis of the literature is needed to understand the PTSD-relationship problem link.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To conduct a meta-analysis of empirical studies examining the association between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and intimate relationship problems.
  • To synthesize existing research on the relationship between PTSD symptomatology and various forms of relationship discord and aggression.

Main Methods:

  • A comprehensive literature search was conducted across major psychological and medical databases (PsycINFO, Medline, PILOTS, Dissertation Abstracts).
  • Thirty-one studies meeting predefined inclusion criteria were identified and included in the meta-analysis.
  • True score correlations were calculated to quantify the strength of associations.

Main Results:

  • Medium-sized associations were found between PTSD and intimate relationship discord (ρ = .38), physical aggression (ρ = .42), and psychological aggression (ρ = .36).
  • Factors such as military samples, US-based studies, and dissertations were associated with stronger PTSD-discord links.
  • Military samples, male participants, community samples, and severe violence measures moderated the PTSD-physical aggression association.

Conclusions:

  • The findings underscore a significant link between PTSD and intimate relationship difficulties.
  • There is a critical need for theoretical models to explain these relationship challenges.
  • Interventions targeting both PTSD symptoms and relationship problems are warranted.
