    Summary

    Infant swimmers may have a higher incidence of otitis media (middle ear infections) than non-swimmers. This pilot study suggests a possible link, warranting further investigation into swimming

    • Otitis media is a common childhood illness.
    • Anecdotal evidence suggests infant swimming may increase risk.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between infant swimming and otitis media incidence.
    • To test the clinical impression of higher otitis media rates in infant swimmers.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of medical records.
    • Parental interviews conducted.
    • Study included 186 children under 4.5 years old.

    Main Results:

    • 65% of swimmers and 50% of non-swimmers had at least one otitis media diagnosis.
    • The observed difference was not statistically significant (p=0.055).
