Background:

  • Physical practice enhances motor adaptation, the ability to adjust to environmental changes.
  • The efficacy of motor imagery (MI) for motor adaptation and skill consolidation remains under investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether motor imagery (MI) training can improve motor adaptation skills, similar to physical practice.
  • To assess the effectiveness of MI in learning mirror-reversed movements and in the subsequent consolidation of motor skills.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty-nine participants performed a joystick tracking task under normal and mirror-reversed conditions.
  • Training involved either physical practice or motor imagery (MI).
  • Eye movements and electromyographic (EMG) activity were recorded during MI; motor performance was assessed post-training and after a 6-hour interval.

Main Results:

  • Both MI and physical practice significantly improved motor performance in the mirror condition compared to a control group.
  • Task completion time decreased further after a 6-hour consolidation period in both normal and mirror conditions.
  • No significant differences were observed between MI and physical practice in improving motor adaptation.

Conclusions:

  • Motor imagery (MI) is an effective training method for acquiring mirror-reversed movements.
  • MI contributes to the consolidation of motor skills following adaptation.
  • These findings highlight the potential of MI as a viable alternative or supplement to physical practice for motor learning.
