Background:

Immigrant general practitioners (GPs) play a vital role in diverse healthcare systems.
Understanding the impact of ethnic background on GP practice is crucial for effective patient care.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate how immigrant GPs in Norway perceive their ethnic background influencing their professional practice.
To explore the experiences and challenges faced by immigrant GPs in Norwegian primary healthcare.

Main Methods:

Qualitative study employing focus groups and individual interviews.
Involved seven immigrant general practitioners (GPs) with varying clinical experience in Norway.
Data analyzed using systematic text condensation.

Main Results:

Immigrant GPs described a bicultural adaptation process, balancing their knowledge with Norwegian cultural expectations.
They demonstrated heightened cultural awareness in consultations, sometimes enabling better care for immigrant patients.
Immigrant GPs reported increased workload and a need for greater diligence to gain acceptance.

Conclusions:

Immigrant GPs possess significant cultural competence and awareness.
Their immigrant background is identified as a valuable asset in clinical practice.
