Iodide administration can induce hypothyroidism even in normal thyroid tissue, not just in those with existing defects. This occurs due to increased thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels, impacting thyroid hormone production.

Background:

  • Iodide-induced hypothyroidism is a known condition.
  • The role of pre-existing thyroid defects in its development is unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if iodide-induced hypothyroidism develops in normal thyroid tissue stimulated by elevated thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH).

Main Methods:

  • Euthyroid patients (post-thyroidectomy and controls) received daily iodide (180 mg) for 3-4 months.
  • Serum TSH, T4, T3, and total iodine levels were monitored.

Main Results:

  • All subjects showed increased serum TSH during iodide administration.
  • TSH increased into the abnormal range in most post-thyroidectomy patients and some controls.

  • Five post-thyroidectomy patients developed mild hypothyroidism symptoms; T4/T3 levels decreased.
  • Two control patients showed slight decreases in T4.
  • Conclusions:
