A review of standardized fetal heart rate (FHR) monitoring definitions and interpretation. Evidence suggests that standardization of intrapartum management can reduce adverse outcomes and professional liability claims. However, standardization of FHR monitoring has been impeded by a lack of consensus on standard definitions and interpretation. In recent years, consensus has been achieved regarding several important aspects of intrapartum FHR monitoring. As a result, the prospect of standardization has become a reality.
