Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the occurrence and characteristics of filtering blebs following canaloplasty.
  • To evaluate the relationship between filtering bleb formation and surgical success in canaloplasty.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty eyes underwent canaloplasty without antimetabolites.
  • Postoperative assessment included clinical examination, anterior segment optical coherence tomography, and ultrasound biomicroscopy.
  • Intraocular pressure (IOP) and medication use were recorded and compared pre- and post-surgery.

Main Results:

  • Filtering blebs were rarely detected clinically; one bleb-like structure was observed via imaging.
  • Mean IOP significantly decreased from 22.15±9.5 mmHg to 13.3±9.9 mmHg.
  • Medication use reduced significantly from 3.15±1.2 to 0.55±0.94, with a 65% success rate for IOP control.

Conclusions:

  • Filtering blebs are uncommon after canaloplasty.
  • Successful IOP reduction after canaloplasty seems independent of subconjunctival aqueous drainage.
  • This suggests canaloplasty may avoid complications associated with conjunctival scarring seen in other glaucoma surgeries.
