Halogens

Group 17 elements, known as halogens, are nonmetals. At room temperature, fluorine and chlorine are gases, bromine is a liquid, and iodine a solid. Astatine is a highly unstable radioactive element, so currently, most of its properties are unknown due to its short half-life. Tennessine is a synthetic element also predicted to be in this group.

Area of Science:

  • Biomaterials Science
  • Polymer Chemistry
  • Dental Materials

Background:

  • Soft lining materials are crucial for denture comfort and function.
  • Conventional materials can degrade over time, affecting performance.
  • Developing materials with long-term stable viscoelastic properties is essential for clinical success.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare fluorinated monomer-based soft lining materials with conventional ones.
  • To evaluate properties relevant to clinical application and long-term stability.
  • To develop novel soft lining materials with enhanced viscoelastic behavior.

Main Methods:

  • Preparation of experimental soft lining materials containing dodecafluoroheptyl methacrylate (SR12F) or tridecafluorooctyl methacrylate (SR13F).
  • Selection of commercial acrylic-based and silicone rubber-based soft lining materials as references.
  • Evaluation of Shore A hardness, viscoelastic properties, water sorption, solubility, and staining resistance.
  • Statistical analysis using two-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD test for hardness and displacements, and one-way ANOVA for water sorption, solubility, and color change.

Main Results:

  • Experimental materials (SR12F and SR13F) exhibited greater viscous flow compared to commercial materials.
  • Fluorinated monomer materials showed lower water sorption and solubility.
  • The SR12F and SR13F materials demonstrated good staining resistance.
  • Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05 for all analyses.

Conclusions:

  • Soft lining materials incorporating fluorinated monomers show promising long-term stable viscoelastic behavior.
  • These materials offer improved physical and chemical properties over conventional soft lining materials.
  • Fluorinated monomers represent a viable approach for developing advanced, durable dental soft lining materials.
