Giving and taking: the family doctor and organ transplantation
Abstract:
Organ transplantation has moved from clinical experimentation to accepted procedure. The number of organs now required highlights the importance of ethical considerations of both donors and recipients. The role of the family physician spans public education, influence on hospitals to maximize the number of organs retrieved from brain dead patients, advice to patients with organ failure concerning the availability and effectiveness of organ transplantation, advice to bereaved families who may consent to organ donation, and advice to living donors.
