Abstract:
Anaphylactic reactions to insect stings occur in about 0.4% of the population and in up to 20% who are family members of beekeepers. Systemic reactions tend to worsen with subsequent stings. Probably four or five people die annually in Canada as a consequence of stings. Efficacy of venom immunotherapy is about 95%. Skin tests with in vitro assessments of venom-specific IgE (allergy antibody) and IgG (blocking antibody), along with leukocyte histamine release, are useful tests of hymenoptera allergy and monitors of treatment effectiveness.
