Area of Science:

  • Food Chemistry
  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Trace Element Analysis

Background:

  • Honey is a natural product with significant nutritional value.
  • Trace elements in honey can indicate geographical origin and potential health benefits.
  • Understanding honey composition is crucial for quality control and consumer information.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify and quantify trace elements in orchard and wild honey from mainland Portugal.
  • To evaluate the nutritional values of the honey samples based on their elemental content.
  • To assess physical properties like electrical conductivity and pH.

Main Methods:

  • Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA) was employed for elemental quantification.
  • Analysis included a comprehensive list of elements: Ag, As, Br, Ca, Cl, Cs, Cu, Fe, K, La, Mg, Mn, Na, Rb, Sb, Sc, U, and Zn.
