Children's Perceptions of Health and Disease
Abstract:
One aspect of preventive medicine is public education. Though primary care physicians educate their patients individually, their involvement in the school system has been limited.A study of children's attitudes toward health was undertaken to define a basis upon which a preventive education program could build. It was found that children are curious about the functioning of their bodies, aware of the importance of exercise and nutrition, and adamantly opposed to smoking. An effective education program should combine factual teaching with the "selling" of a healthy lifestyle to reinforce pre-existing interests and attitudes.
