Purpose of the Study:

  • To retrospectively analyze clinical findings and treatment modalities in patients with spontaneous SEA.
  • To evaluate the impact of these factors on patient outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • A review of 14 patients (10 male, 4 female; mean age 59.14) diagnosed with spontaneous SEA.
  • Data collected included abscess location (dorsal, ventral, cervical, thoracic, lumbar), presenting symptoms (spinal pain, fever, neurological deficit), and treatment interventions.
  • All patients received a minimum of 6 weeks of antibiotics (IV followed by oral).

Main Results:

  • A total of 22 interventions were performed, with instrumentation used in 5 cases.
  • Full recovery was achieved in 7 patients, and significant improvement in 5 others.
  • One patient experienced no neurological change, with one mortality and one morbidity observed.

Conclusions:

  • Spontaneous SEA, though rare, can lead to severe neurological deficits and mortality despite prompt treatment.
  • Clinical suspicion is essential for patients presenting with fever and spinal pain.
  • Early recognition and management are vital for improving patient prognosis.
