Assessment of the Cardiovascular System I: Subjective Data01:23

Assessment of the Cardiovascular System I: Subjective Data

A thorough health history and physical assessment are essential for identifying cardiovascular disease (CVD) symptoms and distinguishing them from other health issues.
Initial Enquiry
Ask the patient about their primary concern and thoroughly explore all reported symptoms.
Medical History
Investigate past illnesses affecting the cardiovascular system, such as angina, anemia, rheumatic fever, congenital heart disease, stroke, thrombophlebitis, dysrhythmias, varicosities
Inquire about symptoms...
Data Collection III01:05

Data Collection III

The physical assessment examines the patient for objective data that defines the patient's condition, and aids in formulating the nursing care plan. The purpose of physical assessment is a health status appraisal, which includes identifying health problems, and establishing a database for nursing intervention.
The principles to begin the physical assessment include conducting a comprehensive or problem-related history in a quiet, well-lit room, emphasizing privacy and comfort for the patient.

Summary

The Basic checklist showed little correlation with physical function improvement in frail elderly after exercise. Assessing physical function before interventions is crucial for effective elderly care.

Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Exercise Physiology
  • Rehabilitation Science

Context:

  • Frailty is a significant concern in aging populations, impacting physical function and quality of life.
  • Community-dwelling frail elderly individuals often benefit from exercise interventions, but their effectiveness requires careful assessment.
  • The Basic checklist is a screening tool used to identify frailty, but its relationship with functional improvements needs clarification.

Purpose:

  • To examine the relationship between the Basic checklist score and physical function in the elderly.
  • To investigate factors associated with the effects of exercise intervention on community-dwelling frail elderly in Japan.
  • To determine if the Basic checklist can predict improvements in physical function following exercise.

Summary:

  • This study assessed 44 elderly participants (average age 73.9) undergoing a 3-month high-intensity muscle strength training program.
  • Measurements included the Basic checklist, physical function tests (walking, balance, flexibility, leg strength), and psychological assessments (GDS, MFES, SF-8).
  • While the Basic checklist correlated with some baseline measures, it showed a weak relationship with improvements in physical function post-intervention.

Impact:

  • The findings suggest the Basic checklist may not accurately reflect functional improvements in frail elderly after exercise.
  • Highlights the need for more sensitive methods to assess physical function changes in response to interventions.
  • Emphasizes the importance of baseline physical function assessment to tailor and evaluate exercise programs for the elderly.
