Metastasis

Metastasis is the spread of cancer cells from the original site to distant locations in the body. Cancer cells can spread via blood vessels (hematogenous) as well as lymph vessels in the body.

Summary

Thymic metastases from lung cancer are extremely rare. This report details the first known case of lung adenocarcinoma metastasizing to the thymus five years post-surgery.

Background:

Primary thymic malignancies, such as thymic carcinoma, are documented.
Metastases to the thymus are exceptionally uncommon in clinical practice.

Observation:

A patient presented with a rare instance of metastatic lung cancer involving the thymus.
This metastasis was identified five years after the initial treatment for stage I lung adenocarcinoma.

Findings:

The case represents the first reported instance of thymic metastasis originating from lung carcinoma.
Diagnostic confirmation involved histopathological analysis of thymic tissue.

Implications:

This case expands the known spectrum of extrathoracic metastases from lung adenocarcinoma.
Highlights the importance of considering unusual metastatic sites in post-treatment surveillance for lung cancer patients.
