Epistaxis01:30

Epistaxis

Epistaxis, or nosebleeds, occurs when small, swollen blood vessels in the nasal mucous membrane rupture. Typically, the anterior septum is the primary site of occurrence.
Etiology
Possible causes of this condition include high blood pressure, trauma, low humidity, upper respiratory tract infections, allergies, foreign bodies, nasal inhalation of corticosteroids or illicit drugs, excessive use of decongestant nasal sprays, facial or nasal surgery, anatomic malformation, tumors, or systemic...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Acoustic rhinometry (AR) and rhinomanometry (RMM) assess nasal airflow and anatomy. Objective assessment of nasal patency is advisable in rhinoplasty, though their exact roles require further study.

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Medical instrumentation

Background:

  • Nasal obstruction is complex, involving more than just nasal patency.
  • Nasal ventilation sensation is influenced by multifactorial origins.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the clinical utility of Acoustic Rhinometry (AR) and Rhinomanometry (RMM).
  • To determine the value of objective nasal patency assessment in functional rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty.

Main Methods:

  • Review of literature on AR and RMM.
  • Listing of normal values for AR and RMM tests.

Main Results:

  • AR and RMM measure distinct parameters of nasal ventilation: respiratory function and nasal cavity anatomy.
  • Normal values for AR and RMM are presented.

Conclusions:

  • Objective assessment of nasal patency is recommended in functional rhinoplasty/septorhinoplasty.
  • The precise roles and established guidelines for AR and RMM in surgical practice are still under investigation.
