Background:

  • Disaster preparedness is a critical skill for emergency physicians (EPs).
  • Assessing the long-term effectiveness of training programs is essential for medical education.
  • This pilot study evaluates a comprehensive training intervention for EPs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To measure the effectiveness of a 1-year comprehensive training program.
  • To assess the long-term cognitive competence in disaster preparedness among attending EPs.
  • To evaluate improvements in disaster preparedness knowledge and self-assessment.

Main Methods:

  • Ten attending EPs participated in a year-long disaster preparedness training program.
  • Training included didactic core topics, recognized courses, and practical drills.
  • Pretraining and post-training written tests and self-evaluation questionnaires were administered and compared.

Main Results:

  • A statistically significant increase in overall post-test versus pretest scores on the written examination was observed (44.4 vs. 29.8, p < 0.005).
  • Statistically significant increases in self-assessed disaster preparedness were noted (2.7 +/- 0.82 vs. 3.9 +/- 0.56, p = 0.01).
  • Improvements were significant across all areas of disaster preparedness evaluated.

Conclusions:

  • A yearlong pilot training program significantly enhanced cognitive competence in disaster preparedness among EPs.
  • The findings suggest the training program is effective in improving preparedness.
  • Further research is needed to validate the training content and evaluation instruments.
