Summary

The learning curve for reverse total shoulder arthroplasty is about 40 cases. Revision surgeries showed a trend toward more complications, especially nerve issues, compared to primary procedures.

  • Local complications occurred in 9.9% of shoulders, systemic in 4.7%.
  • The local complication rate decreased significantly after the first 40 cases (23.1% vs. 6.5%).
  • Revision RTSA had a higher local complication rate (17.5% vs. 7.9%) and more frequent nerve palsies (9.8% vs. 0.6%) than primary RTSA.

Conclusions:

  • The learning curve for RTSA is approximately 40 cases.
  • Revision RTSA may be associated with a higher complication rate and increased risk of neuropathies compared to primary RTSA.
