Summary

DBA/2J and DBA/2NHsd mice develop age-related glaucoma with similar vision loss. DBA/2NHsd mice show poorer visual acuity earlier, making them a viable alternative model for pigmentary glaucoma research.

  • Intraocular pressure (IOP) was determined using applanation tonometry.
  • Main Results:

    • Both DBA/2J and DBA/2NHsd mice exhibited age-related increases in IOP without significant differences between substrains.
    • Visual acuity and contrast sensitivity significantly decreased with age in both substrains.
    • DBA/2NHsd mice displayed poorer visual acuity at younger ages compared to age-matched DBA/2J mice.

    Conclusions:

    • Both DBA/2J and DBA/2NHsd mice present a progressive glaucomatous phenotype with age-related IOP increases and vision loss.
    • The similar progression of IOP and visual deficits supports their use as glaucoma models.
    • DBA/2NHsd mice are a suitable alternative model for studying pigmentary glaucoma.
