Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if individuals with depressive or anxiety disorders have increased arterial stiffness.
  • To explore associations between specific psychiatric characteristics and arterial stiffness.

Main Methods:

  • 449 cases with lifetime depressive/anxiety disorders and 169 controls (ages 20-66).
  • Assessed psychiatric characteristics: comorbidity, subtype, severity, duration, age of onset, medication.
  • Measured arterial stiffness using radial tonometry (AIx75) and carotid ultrasound (distensibility coefficient).

Main Results:

  • Current depression/anxiety associated with increased AIx75 (15.7% vs. 13.3% in controls, p=.01).
  • Higher AIx75 linked to comorbidity, greater depression/anxiety severity, and longer symptom duration.
  • No significant associations found for distensibility coefficient.

Conclusions:

  • Current depressive or anxiety disorders are associated with elevated central augmentation index, indicating arterial stiffness.
  • Depression and anxiety may accelerate atherosclerosis and cardiovascular conditions.
